Cajsa Ekstav
Cajsa Ekstav is a brilliant Swedish nyckelharpa player, violinist and singer.
She was born and raised in Vendel, in northern Uppland, a region with a very rich folk music tradition. It is in Cajsa’s home region that the nyckelharpa has its strongest foothold, and it is there that the instrument has survived in an unbroken tradition for centuries. She has been playing the fiddle and the nyckelharpa since the age of eight and learnt to play in the direct tradition of the region’s great folk musicians, including the legendary nyckelharpa player Eric Sahlström and his younger brother Sture Sahlström. As a child, she remembers visits to her family farm by another master musician, Viksta-Lasse, who was a relative and would sometimes drop by to say hello and play lively polskas.
Cajsa also sings folk songs and is often sought after as a teacher of folk singing. Cajsa has played and performed in many different settings in Sweden and abroad. Over the years, her venues have ranged from village halls in Uppland and Japanese schools to luxury hotels in Egypt and dance floors in the USA. As a member of the folk music trio ‘Vendelkråkorna’, Cajsa has travelled with the Swedish royal couple on their official state visit to Egypt. Other countries Cajsa has toured include France, Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium, Iceland, Norway, the UK, Russia, Canada and Japan. She is a much-loved teacher and a frequently sought-after course leader both in Sweden and abroad. Cajsa has toured the USA many times, both in smaller ensembles and as a solo musician.
Cajsa is a member of several different folk music groups, including “Trollrike Spelmän” and “Systerpolskan”, a folk music group formed on the initiative of Benny Andersson of ABBA.
Cajsa was awarded the title of ‘riksspelman’ for her nyckelharpa playing in 1990 and received the Upland Folkmusicians’ Association’s gold badge in 2008. She has also received awards such as the Viksta-Lasse scholarship, the Uppsala County Council’s honorary scholarship and the Uppsala Municipality’s cultural scholarship. For several years, Cajsa served as a member of the Zorn jury, which assesses candidates and awards the title of “riksspelman”. She has been chair of the Eric Sahlström Memorial Foundation for many years.
