Torbjörn Näsbom
Torbjörn was born and raised in Uppland, learning to play fiddle from his father. He had the privilege from an early age to meet and play with great masters such as Viksta Lasse and Eric Sahlström. Later, after studying violin at, among others, Sveriges Radio’s music school at Edsbergs Castle and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, Torbjörn was employed by the Umeå Symphony Orchestra at Norrland Opera.
Alongside the violin, he also began to play the nyckelharpa, which gradually took over and became his main instrument. In addition to playing folk music, Torbjörn plays classical music, especially from the Baroque era. He has performed as a soloist with, among others, Sveriges Radio’s Symphony, Drottningholm’s Baroque Ensemble, Stockholm’s Baroque Orchestra, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, and symphony orchestras in Umeå and Gävle. He has also toured in Europe, Asia and the USA with the mezzo-soprano Ann-Sofe von Otter.
In 2014 Torbjörn received the Zorn gold medal, being recognized for his “Virtuosic, masterful and tradition-conscious playing on the violin and nyckelharpa”. This is the highest award you can receive in Sweden as a folk musician.
As if that weren’t enough, Torbjörn is an excellent and patient instructor, focusing on technique and how to become a better nyckelharpa player, regardless of the style of music you may choose to play.
